Basic Data Analysis with Excel

COMING SOON! If you are interested in collecting data from clients and stakeholders, but are unfamiliar with what to do after you’ve collected your data, then this is the perfect training for you! This training will help you get familiar with how to conduct basic data analysis using Excel (PC only). This course is perfect for beginners and a great complement to 'How to Conduct a Program Evaluation'!.

This brief training is designed to help organizations to analyze the many common types of survey data collected from clients using newer versions of Excel for PC. This introductory course will help you get comfortable manipulating an Excel data sheet and show you how to install the Data Analysis Tookpack and perform several analyses including finding the average value, identifying the range of values, comparing differences on a value between two groups, and examining the reliability of your survey! This training is perfect for those with little to no formal research, statistics, or Excel training.

Please note:Excel for Mac has different features and commands, but can also run basic data analysis; you cannot conduct data analysis using GoogleSheets

At the end of this training, trainees will understand:  

  • How to read an Excel spreadsheet
  • How to install the Data Analysis Toolpack for PC
  • How to sort and filter data in a spreadsheet
  • How to describe values in a spreadsheet (average, range, highest value and lowest value)
  • How to tell whether a difference exists between two groups of people on a value
  • How to examine an existing scale to determine whether or not it is relaible

Dr. Stephanie Kennedy has nearly a decade of experience conducting social work research in prisons, jails, communities, and non-profit organizations. She has helped non-profit organizations conduct program evaluations and has expertise in collecting and analyzing evaluation data. Dr. Kennedy is also a seasoned teacher and trainer and has a gift for breaking down complex research and statistical concepts and terminology into digestible language for practitioners and others with little to no research experience. Her students routinely ask for “More Excel!” on course evaluations and are excited to take their data analytic skills into the non-profit sector!
