Immigrants in the Criminal Justice System
When migrating to a new country, there are many challenges that accompany new territories including learning the language, culture, and norms, and navigating through the employment system. However, we seldom think about the additional challenges that immigrants face navigating through the US criminal justice system. The number of immigrants involved in the criminal justice system has increased dramatically in recent years and immigrants face unique challenges in justice settings.
This training focuses on the tools necessary for culturally competent work with immigrants in the criminal justice system. The content of this training will include the knowledge necessary to adequately support this population using culturally competent rapport building.
At the end of this training, trainees will understand:
- The scope of immigrants involved in the US criminal justice system
- Factors that bring immigrants into the criminal justice system
- The unique challenges faced by justice-involved immigrants
- How stigma influences the experience of immigrants in the criminal justice system
- Current programs designed to help immigrants in the criminal justice system
