How to Conduct a Program Evaluation - Course 3 in the Nonprofit Series

Determine whether your programs are effective

In this training, we help you conduct a program evaluation to determine whether or not your program is working. This introductory training is suitable for any organization currently implementing a program with patients, clients, or other stakeholders.

This brief training is designed to help organizations to evaluate an existing program to determine whether or not it is effective and meeting client needs. In this introduction to program evaluation, trainees will learn how to create an evaluation team, prepare and implement a program evaluation, and use the findings from the evaluation to improve program and organizational functioning. This training is perfect for those with little to no formal research training.

At the end of this training, trainees will understand:

  • The why and how of program evaluation
  • How to identify program goals
  • How to describe an existing program
  • How to ask measurable, relevant questions to guide the evaluation
  • How to identify the information needed to conduct the evaluation
  • How to create a plan to collect and learn from the information you gather

What our trainees are saying:

"The training video provided us with a much-needed roadmap to follow as we navigate an assessment of our residential reentry program at Mercy House. It offered focus — we routinely revisit our newly drafted mission statement and outcome goals — as we wade through existing records and fill in the gaps with interviews. It has prompted a more assessment-centric mentality in our daily routines as well, and we already have implemented entry surveys, as suggested in the video, so that we can continue to evaluate and improve our program for the residents." -- Olivia H.

“The Program Evaluation Training was very informative and helpful for us as we are currently doing a Program Assessment. It provided us with actionable information we are able to implement and as a result are collecting measurable results. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know whether their programs are working.” -- Dale White, Mercy House, Tallahassee, Florida

"Program evaluation has always seemed like an intimidating endeavor to take on; this training helped me understand program evaluation and it made the task seem more manageable. In particular, I learned about data collection, the ways data can be gathered, and the most effective ways to share my findings. This training was extremely helpful as I move forward in my career." -- Coty M.
