New Report Released!

The third in a series of quarterly reports describing the inner workings and early discoveries of the 5-Key Model for Reentry was just released. Read the breaking media alert and access the full report here.

Media Alert

In a heart-wrenching letter, Carrie Pettus-Davis, IJRD's Executive Director, describes how the existence of a 17-year gap between scientific innovation and actual changes to policy and practice directly affects her family. The report details the steps she and her team are taking to accelerate the scientific process and improve outcomes.

Our Approach

Unlike traditional academic research centers, our approach is anchored in trans-sector innovation. We use this approach because it is clear that the problems in criminal justice cannot be solved solely from within - this has been tried for decades with little progress. Trans-sector innovation uses a problem solving approach that brings various disciplines together to respond to the increasingly connected and complex challenges facing our communities.

Testing Evidence-Based Trauma-Informed Treatment with Adults Releasing from Jail in Seminole County, Florida

Nearly 96% of incarcerated men and women report at least one lifetime traumatic experience with most reporting an average of three lifetime traumatic experiences. Left untreated, trauma symptoms can increase the likelihood of future behavioral health problems and entanglement in the criminal justice system.

In a new innovative approach to responding to traumatic experiences, the James E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County, Florida is partnering with IJRD to implement trauma-informed treatment designed for incarcerated individuals preparing for release from jail. The trauma treatment, Skills Training for Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) will be delivered in individual and group-based therapy sessions inside the jail as well as in community settings.

The implementation of STAIR includes the delivery of services as well as a research study to assess the feasibility and impact of STAIR on a variety of recipient outcomes. Therefore, we are hiring two part-time positions – a Trauma-Informed Care Practitioner to deliver treatment to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women and a Research and Assessment Specialist to enroll participants into the study and conduct data collection interviews before and after the intervention in the jail and in community settings.
